Game 6 Results - Bamberg Bears

It was quite the rematch! The Bears lost to the mighty Sharks 14 to 7 but it came down to the wire. With a few minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Sharks marched down the field to put the game away but the Bears stopped them at the goal line. Then with only 4 minutes left, the Bears came all the way back to the Sharks 15 but fumbled the ball with 3 seconds left.

Yesterday the Straubing Spiders came to Erlangen and left with a victory 20 to 14. The Sharks couldn't get their offense going for the second straight loss.

In other league news,the Kümmersbruck Red Devils beat the Bamberg Bears 26 to 18. With these results, the league standings are now as follows:

Football Practice: One Time Schedule Change

This Saturday’s practice (April 21, 2007) has been moved from the usual 3 pm (15.00) back. It now will start at 12 noon (12.00) and go until 2 pm (14.00). After practice there will be an opportunity to travel with the Youth Team to Fürth to catch their season opener. Next week practice will be at the regular times.

The next Krafttraining (Power Training) will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at the Gahm Family Gym in Baiersdorf. Training begins at 7 pm. Training will go until at least 9 pm so its OK if you can't make it at 7 pm -- Just show up!

On the A73 heading North from Erlangen, take exit Möhrendorf (first exit after Erlangen-Nord). Turn right, at the roundabout head for Baiersdorf. Now it's straight ahead...past the station in Baiersdorf, straight ahead at the traffic lights. At the studio there is a VW shop across the street.

Concerning the final game:
"Im Finale mobilisierte Erlangen dann nochmals alle Kräfte und war deutlich besser eingestellt gegen die favorisierten Gastgeber. Die Sharks begannen konzentriert und nutzen die erste Angriffsserie gleich konsequent aus. Nach einen langen Pass und einem anschließenden Laufspielzug gingen die Sharks mit 6:0 in Führung. Doch die Generals konterten und bewiesen in ihrer ersten Angriffsserie gute Nerven. Nachdem drei Spielversuche nur zu 5 Meter Raumgewinn geführt hatten, lief Lars van Amerongen dann im vierten und entscheidenden Versuch 35 Meter in die gegnerische Endzone zum 6:6. Nachdem auch der Zusatzversuch in die Endzone getragen werden konnte, gingen die Generals erstmals mit 8:6 in Führung. Kurz vor der Halbzeit sorgte dann die Göttinger Defense für den Ausbau der Führung. Florian Bangert, nahm einen Fumble der Sharks auf und trug den Ball zum Touchdown. Damit lagen die Generals zum Seitenwechsel keineswegs komfortabel mit 14:6 in Führung. Nach dem Wiederanpfiff freuten sich die Fans gemeinsam mit den Generals aber den Ausbau der Führung. Nach einem langen Lauf und anschließendem Zusatzversuch stand es 22:6 für die Gastgeber. Doch die Sharks gaben nicht auf und kamen mit einem weiteren Touchdown zurück ins Spiel. Allerdings bleib den Sharks nur noch rund 1 Minute Restspielzeit, nachdem sie auf 22:14 verkürzen konnten. Die Generals konnten die Restspielzeit dann geschickt runterspielen, ohne noch allzu viel riskieren zu müssen. Spieler des Tages war Lars Bode (33), der insgesamt 42 Punkte erzielte und auch im Finale 4 Punkte zum 22:14-Endergebnis beisteuerte."

Different Year -- Same Results. It was a hard fought tournament with the Erlangen Sharks making it to the finals for the second year in a row. And for the second year in a row, they met the Göttingen Generals there! The result was a close (one TD) loss 22 to 14. Second place is nothing to be sad about, but let's just say we are already preparing for next year.

Beschluß
Über die Vergabe des freien Platzes in der Bayernliga 2007
hat der Spielausschuss des AFVBy am 13.01.2007 beschlossen,
daß die HOF JOKERS den freien Platz in der Bayernliga erhalten.

Begründung: Der Spielausschuss hat lange darüber diskutiert ob man Bamberg, die sich als erste für den freien Platz beworben haben, oder Hof als zweitgemeldeten Verein den Vorrang gibt. Spielerisch und auch bei der Manschaftsstärke sind beide Teams gleich angesehen.

Ausschlaggebend für diese Entscheidung war letztendlich die, daß für die Zukunft und auch für die neue Landesspielordnung, die es ab 2008 innerhalb des AFVBy geben wird, so sein soll, daß der Absteiger, sollte noch ein Platz in der Liga frei sein, das Erstrecht auf einen Platz in der höheren Liga hat. Mit diesem Hintergedanken im Kopf und um auch die Weichen für 2008 zu stellen, wurde dies so entschieden.

The 11th Annual Göttingen Bowl (aka the Burger King Bowl XI) will be held on Saturday, February 24th, 2007 in the Hallenfootball-Turnier in Göttingen, Germany. Last year the Erlangen Sharks placed 2nd out of 6 teams, narrowing losing to the Generals in the finals.

So far 5 teams have signed up:

League Preview for Next Season

Here is a preview of the Bayernliga, Verbandsliga and Aufbauliga structure for the 2007 season. The Aufbauliga has not completed their season yet, so the 6th Verbandsliga team has not been yet determined.

The Hof Jokers, after only one season in the Bayernliga (after moving up from the Verbandsliga in 2005), return to the Verbandsliga for 2007. If the Sharks had to pick their least favorite team, it would have to be the Jokers. This new addition added to the increased rivalries against the Red Devils and Bears formed this past season will make for quite a hard fight for the Sharks next year. Training starts now!

In the rematch of the first game of the season, the Erlangen Sharks lost to the Bamberg Bears 28 to 46 at home in Erlangen. This brings an end to the Sharks 3rd season with a final record of 6 wins and 4 losses. Although the loss was disappointing, the Sharks are commended on their first winning season in team history.

Running back Ricky Williams broke his left arm in the second quarter of the Toronto Argonauts' 26-23 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday night and is out indefinitely.

It happened again! The Erlangen Sharks lost to the Starnberg Argonauts 48 to 16 away in Starnberg. There's no excuse for losing but.....
With their victory, the Argonauts clinch first place in the Verbandsliga Bayern and get to move up a league next year. The Sharks own second place and have to beat the Bamberg Bears in their last game to guarantee finishing in that spot.

One down -- Two to go!

The rematch was all it was billed to be (previous post) and then some! In an exiting game up until the very end, the Erlangen Sharks defeated the Kümmersbruck Red Devils 36-32 in Kümmersbruck.

And, although its nothing close to the scar Tobi earned in Game 5, the Sharks QB got 3 more stitches on his chin for his good blocking technique.

Take the A73 direction South to the A3 direction Munich. Follow A3 until it meets the A6. Take the A6 direction Amberg. Stay on the A6 for about 48km.
Take exit 66 (Amberg-Süd) and head in the direction of Amberg.
Turn right onto Sebastian-Kneipp-Strasse. At the first round-about, go to Schulstrasse. Then right onto Hasenweg and another right onto Am Butzenweg. Look for the field!

Kickoff is 3pm, Saturday, July 15, 2006. Be there!

Erlangen Sharks Updated in English Wikipedia

The Erlangen Sharks entry in the English version of Wikipedia is now up to date:

Unfortunately, the German Wikipedia entry has been deleted because some German Wikipedia Freak didn't think a 5th league team in Germany was worthy of note. I strongly disagree --

1. The Verbandsliga is part of the overall structure of the American Football in Germany.
2. The Erlangen Sharks are proud members of that league.
3. The Erlangen Sharks can move up to 4th league then 3rd league, etc.
3. The Erlangen Sharks are just as good as any 4th league team as proven by our competitiveness against the the Gö ttingen Generals (who are currently 5-0 in the Oberliga Nord).
4. Finally, because Jörg Bürgis who recommended the deletion can kiss my American-playing-American-football-in-Germany-and-loving-every-minute-of-it ass as he is preparing for his next Boy Scout meeting.

The Erlangen Sharks defeated the Augsburg Raptors for the second time this season in as many tries with a 28-22 victory in Augsburg. It was a good solid victory for the Sharks considering weather conditions were far from ideal (it was hot as hell) and they had to use three different Quarterbacks due to injuries.

Dustin Elliot, number #17 (sometimes #1), of the Starnberg Argonauts is an NCAA Division III football player from the University of La Verne, California. He has come to Germany for the sole purpose of playing for the Argonauts in his offseason.

He is quick and very skilled. All teams should pay close attention to him and plan to put on double coverage. Do not let him get the ball -- pass, run, punt or kickoff.

How can you score 42 points and lose the game? When the other team scores 55.

Wow -- That would have been a cool line to use if the Sharks had won the game, but instead its just the sad truth. Sharks lose to the Starnberg Argonauts 42 to 55 at home.

It was a very physical game. Many players on both sides fell to injury, not the least being the Sharks' Tobias Stoll, #24, who broke his leg early in the second half. Best wishes to a speedy and full recovery Tobi!

Home opener 2006 yields success! In the second season game and first home game, the Sharks played against the Augsburg Raptors. The Raptors were able to decide both games in the 2005 season and had already observed the Sharks in the game against the Bears. The game promised to be exciting and the Sharks had to stay focused so they could earn the first home victory of the 2006 season.

The Raptors won the coin toss and decided to begin on offense. Even with both running and passing plays the Raptors could not get anything started and had to punt the ball. It was a great punt and the Sharks began at their own 10 yard line. On the first play the Sharks got a penalty and found themselves 5 yards closer to their own Endzone. But on the next play, the blockers broke through the Raptors defense and the Sharks running back took the ball down the entire length of the field for a touchdown. The 95 yard-run was the second longest in Sharks history! The 2-point conversion failed and the Sharks led six to zero.

The offense of the Raptors tried again and again with long pass attempts, but the Sharks cornerbacks played good coverage (although they could have made a few interceptions if they just turned around!). Also for the remainder of the half the Sharks made no more headway with their offense as the Raptors played hard and made them work for every yard. Accordingly the rest of the first quarter was mainly just a series of punts from both teams.

In the second quarter, the offense of the Sharks got into their groove. The defense of the Raptors made some mistakes and the Sharks capitalized on them. A few good plays brought the Sharks to midfield and from there they only needed one more play to bridge the remaining distance. The second touchdown run for 45 yards increased the lead to 12 points. The subsequent drive by the Raptors started well and the Sharks defense started sweating, but as if on cue at midfield, the Raptors’ ball carrier took a hard tackle and fumbled to ball to the Sharks. It was a gift that the Sharks offense thankfully took. A long pass completion followed up by a good run for a touchdown expanded the lead to 18 points.

After the touchdown, only 4 seconds remained on the clock. The Raptors did their best to use the time and completed a long pass but it didn’t get them to the end zone. At halftime the Sharks lead remained at 18 to zero.

After the half, the Sharks began on offense. Needing only two plays, the Sharks ran down the field 70 yards for 6 more points. After the successful two-point conversion, the game stood at 26 to zero for Erlangen. Following this with the Sharks on defense, an interception and the subsequent return gave the offense the opportunity to bring the Sharks lead to 34 points.

In the fourth quarter, the defense of the Sharks sealed the game. An intercepted pass resulted in a touchdown and after the successful conversion the score was 42:0. To their credit, the Raptors never gave up and fought their way down the field. The Sharks defense lost its concentration and started making mistakes. When the Raptors stood finally before the Sharks end zone, they made it count with a QB-Sneak to score 6 points. Again in ball possession, the Sharks wanted to rundown the clock, but on fourth down succeeded in running the ball to the Raptors red zone. The Sharks scored again to bring the lead to 50 to 6.

However the last word belonged to the guests. With less than a minute to play and 70 yards away from scoring, the Raptors mounted a successful campaign and scored with a passing touchdown as time expired. The final score was 50 to 14 for the Sharks.

Hey Sharks! We need one or more volunteers to keep the Deutsch Wikipedia entry for the Erlangen Sharks up to date. I've got the English one covered but anyone can edit that one too!

Jens Goedel created the original entry in the Deutsch Wikipedia, but now we need people to edit the page as new events happen. Also if there is anything you want to add about the history of the Sharks or previous seasons then don't be shy to make that edit in either language!

Editing in Wikipedia is easy and does not require registration. Just click on the edit this page tab on the top of the topic. The links to both versions of the Sharks in Wikipedia are found on the right of this page under "JA MANN, FOOTBALL!".

Also, under "See also" in the Wikipedia entry is a link to a List of American football teams in Germany (and Liste von deutschen Footballmannschaften respectively). This "ultimate" league structure is not up to date or all-inclusive. Anyone can update it! And as you can see from that page, all the team names are hyperlinks to their own Wikipedia entry -- but 95% of the links go nowhere since there is not an entry for them!

Maybe we can encourage the other teams in our league to start their own Wikipedia page so that those links work and our league is better represented. Can some of you explain this idea to them by commenting in the other teams guestbooks? They can first copy our template in Wikipedia (click "edit this page" then copy the source code) so that the style is uniform.....

The Sharks win the first away game against the Bamberg Bears. The second Verbandsliga season began with an away game against the team from Bamberg. The Sharks had prepared in the last few weeks for this game and wanted to begin this season better than in the year 2005. The long winter break finally came to an end….

The Sharks won first the Coin Toss and decided to begin on offense. The first 4 attempts were a little chaotic and after one fumbled snap and two false starts the Sharks punted the ball to midfield.

The offense of the Bears got off to a better start; a 36 yard run brought them directly to the 10 yard line of the Sharks. This was the wake up call! The Sharks started to focus and kept the Bamberg team away from the end zone during the next 4 attempts.

Now also the offense loosened up. Three long runs led them into Bear's territory and from 37 yards the Sharks scored the first touchdown. The running back scored uncontested due to good blocks and good fakes by the rest of the offense. The extra point attempt failed, but the Sharks were up 6 to nothing.

With the next ball possession the Bears could not get a first down and had to punt. The Sharks blocked the punt and got the ball within the Bamberg red zone. Unfortunately the Sharks fumbled on the first run and the ball went back into the hands of the Bears.

The Bears used this gift with some very good runs to march back down the field. They were stopped again before the goal line and tried to kick a field goal. The attempt was blocked and the ball was run back for a touchdown. With a two-point conversion, the Sharks went up 14 to nothing.

Before halftime the Sharks scored again and were up 20 to 0 at the half.

The second half time began with Deja Vu. The Sharks recovered their own kickoff at the beginning of half and needed only 3 plays to score again. After a successful two-point conversion the Sharks were up 28 to zero.

And again, with good hustle down the field, the Sharks got the ball on their own kickoff. This time the Sharks needed 5 plays to score, making it 34 to nothing.

When the Bears finally had a successful kickoff return they used it to drive into the Sharks’ red zone. But the Sharks defense intercepted the ball in the end zone on the next play to put an end to the Bears' plan.

Only in the fourth quarter did the Bears successfully use its running game to score their first touchdown with a successful two-point conversion.

On their next-to-last drive, the Sharks ended a two-year streak of bad luck and finally scored their first passing touchdown in team history to bring the score to 40 to 8.

The Bears had the final say in the game and managed to score a touchdown to bring the final score to 40 to 16.

The Sharks won their first game of the season despite many errors. Both the offense and the defense continuously fought against their own nervousness. Notwithstanding that, overall the Sharks played effectively and consistently.

Everything did not run perfectly smooth and there is lots of room for improvement. The Sharks have just a short time before their home game opener on May 7 against the Augsburg Raptors. But don't worry; the Sharks will set everything in order to defend their first place in the standings.

The Sharks solidly defeated the Bears in Bamberg 40-16 on Sunday. It was an awesome start to the season. Some of the highlights:

-Sharks Defense dominates the Bears, sacking the poor QB almost everytime
-Jason Noble throws the first passing TD in Sharks history to Daniel Wolfrum
-Thomas Sinner returns a blocked field goal for TD!
